Working in Hong Kong

In general, non-permanent residents are not allowed to take up employment in Hong Kong, unless the person has obtained approval from the Director of Immigration and have not breached any condition of stay.

For first-time appointee from overseas who is not holding a permanent Hong Kong Identity Card or a dependent visa, a visa/entry permit is needed to work in Hong Kong. The employment visa usually takes more than 4 weeks for the Immigration Department to process the application and we will help you to go through the process.

If you are currently employed in Hong Kong under an employment visa, you are required to seek prior approval from the Director of Immigration for change in employment. Routine applications will normally be finalised within two to three weeks. Please visit

If you are newly arrive from overseas, and have been permitted to stay in Hong Kong for more than 180 days, you must register for an identity card within 30 days of arrival. An appointment should be made as soon as possible, which can be made online or through the 24-hour telephone hotline. Upon receipt of the identity card, you have to carry it at all times.

Salaries are paid monthly in arrears, and will generally be credited into your designated bank account by the last working day of the month. If you do not possess a bank account in Hong Kong, you have to go to a bank to set up an account after receipt of your identity card, and
inform the School about the account details.

It is an employment-based retirement protection system in Hong Kong. If you are aged 18 to 65 years old, who will be employed for a continuous period of 60 days or more, you are required to join an MPF scheme. The School, as well as your good self, will make regular mandatory contributions calculated at 5% of your relevant income to the MPF scheme, subject to the minimum and maximum relevant income levels. The current minimum and maximum relevant income levels are $7,100 and $30,000 respectively for a monthly-paid employee. You can be exempted to join the Scheme if you enter Hong Kong from overseas for employment for not more than 13 months, or who are covered by overseas retirement schemes. You can claim tax deductions for your mandatory contributions made to an MPF scheme, subject to the current maximum amount of $18,000. Any voluntary contributions made by you are not tax deductible. Withdrawal of accrued benefits is only allowed when you reach the age of 65, or under certain circumstances such as permanent departure from Hong Kong.

In Hong Kong, tax payable is calculated at progressive rates on your net chargeable income or at standard rate on your net income, whichever is lower. Your income will be assessed by the Inland Revenue Department, and the year of assessment runs from 1 April to 31 March of the following year. Computation includes an amount of tax assessed for the final and provisional assessments. The School will not withhold the tax on your behalf so you are strongly recommended to put aside some money from your salary for your annual tax demand note.

When you cease employment with the School with an intention to leave Hong Kong and
return to your home country, we will withhold all payment of money or money’s worth to
you for a period of one month until you clear the tax and a Letter of Release is received from the Immigration Department.
